Walking into a lab for the first time can feel more complicated than it needs to be. Whether your doctor just handed you an order or you're coming in for a routine check, knowing what to expect ahead of time makes the whole visit faster and a lot less stressful. Here's exactly what happens at a walk-in lab visit at Advance Medical Lab in Mission, TX — from the moment you walk in to the moment your results reach your doctor.
Before you go: what to bring
What you need to bring depends on how you're paying for your visit:
If you're using insurance (Medicare, Medicaid, or a private plan), you'll need:
- Your doctor's order. This is the signed lab order from your physician listing which tests you need. Insurance companies require a valid order on file to process a claim, so this is required if you want your visit billed to insurance.
- Your insurance card. Bring your card so our front desk can verify your coverage before your visit.
- A photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, or passport works. This is required to confirm your identity before any sample is collected.
If you're paying out of pocket (self-pay), you do not need a doctor's order. You can walk in, choose the tests you'd like, and pay directly at the time of your visit. You'll still need:
- A photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, or passport works.
Self-pay patients can ask our front desk about pricing for any test before deciding — no order and no pressure.
What happens when you arrive
No appointment is required for a walk-in visit. You can come in anytime during business hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, or Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Here's the process once you walk through the door:
- Check-in. Our front desk verifies your doctor's order and insurance information, or sets you up as a self-pay patient if that applies. If you're self-pay, we'll walk you through pricing before anything else happens.
- Sample collection. Depending on your test, this usually means a quick blood draw or a urine sample. Our team collects hundreds of samples a week, and most patients are in and out of this step in under 10 minutes.
- You're done. Once your sample is collected, you're free to go. There's no waiting around for results on-site.
If you're anxious about blood draws, let the staff know when you check in. A quick heads-up helps our phlebotomists make the process as smooth as possible.
How long does the whole visit take?
Most walk-in visits take 15 to 20 minutes from check-in to walking back out the door, depending on how busy we are and how many tests are on your order. Mornings tend to move a little faster than late afternoons.
When will I get my results?
This depends on which tests were ordered. Advance Medical Lab processes most routine panels — things like a Complete Blood Count (CBC), Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), or Lipid Panel — in-house, which means same-day results in most cases. Some specialized tests are sent to a reference laboratory and typically come back within 24 hours.
Either way, your results are sent directly to the physician who ordered your labs. If you're not sure how your doctor's office will notify you, it's worth asking them directly — some offices call, others use a patient portal.
You can see our full list of testing panels and which ones are processed same-day versus sent out for additional processing.
What if I don't have insurance or a doctor's order?
If you don't have insurance, you can still walk in and pay out of pocket. Self-pay patients don't need a doctor's order — just bring a photo ID and let our front desk know you'd like to pay directly. We'll walk you through pricing for whatever tests you're interested in before your visit.
If you do have insurance and want to use it, a doctor's order is required — insurance companies won't process a claim without one. If you're not sure how to get an order, give us a call at (956) 581-5555 and we can point you in the right direction.
Can't make it in? We can come to you.
If you're homebound or unable to travel — whether due to a medical condition, mobility issue, or you're receiving home health services — you don't have to come to us. If your doctor has ordered home health services, your home health agency can arrange for one of our phlebotomists to visit you directly. We run dedicated mobile phlebotomy routes across Cameron, Starr, and Hidalgo counties specifically for situations like this.
If you're not sure whether this applies to you, ask your home health agency about lab services, or give us a call and we'll help you figure out the best option.
Prefer to skip the wait?
While walk-ins are always welcome, you can also submit your information ahead of time and pick a time slot that works for your schedule. It takes about two minutes and means less time spent waiting when you arrive.
Whether you walk in or schedule ahead, our goal is the same: get you in, get your sample collected professionally, and get accurate results back to your doctor as fast as possible. That's what a local, independent lab should feel like.
